`Volcanic ash pendants can cause cancer'
The Health Ministry has warned consumers against using the Quantum Pendant or Fusion Excel pendant as it contains radioactive material, which can cause health risks.
Minister Datuk Seri Dr S. Subramaniam said the pendant, made from volcanic ash, contained natural radioactive elements, uranium-238 and thorium-232.
"Analyses have found that there is a high concentration of thorium content in the pendant -- above the allowed limit.
"The usage of the pendants can cause cancer or genetic effects to the user, especially after wearing it for an extended period of time."
He said the control on the sale of the lockets fell under the Atomic Energy Licensing Board (AELB), as it was not classified under the Medical Devices Act 2012.
The ministry, however, will work together with the relevant agencies, including the Customs Department to prevent further sale of the product.
The pendant, sold at several online stores as well as at night markets, was said to have several health benefits which includes increasing the energy and memory of the wearer, and improving blood circulation.
